October 29, 2006:
The Story of Theresienstadt:
Hitler's Model Concentration Camp for Jews
Presented by Henry Wellisch
Mr. Henry Wellisch, former president of the Jewish
Genealogical Society of Canada (Toronto) 1993-1998,
will present the story of Theresienstadt a model
concentration camp for Jews that the German Nazis
established during WWII in the Czech Republic.
The purpose of the model camp was to use it for
counter propaganda purposes to refute the persistent
reports on the continuing massacres in the East.
He will discuss the establishment of this ghetto;
explain the life there and the sad fate of most
of its inhabitants, the tens of thousands of Jews
from Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia and
from other countries. A propaganda documentary
film made by the Nazis will also be shown.
Mr. Wellisch, born in Vienna, Austria escaped
from there in 1940 and spent the war years in
a British internment camp on the island of Mauritius.
About twenty three years ago he began investigating
his family background. He has concentrated his
research on the Austro-Hungarian Empire and was
able to trace his family back to the middle of
the 18th century. He has published numerous articles
and has lectured on various genealogical subjects.
Don't miss this opportunity to become familiar
with one of the chapters in the History of the
Shoah.
