Founded in 1985, JGS of Michigan provides members with the opportunity to be associated with others who share a common interest in Jewish Genealogy. Our meetings are a forum to exchange information, to share resources and experiences and to learn new techniques for research.

JGSMI conducted a number of activities during 2005: Issued “Generations” the Society’s quarterly newsletter and held several board meetings throughout the year. The Society offered a number of lectures: “Genealogical Research Using Court Records,” “The Jews of Shanghai,” “From the Baltics to the Balkans: The Many Faces of Jewish Life in Eastern Europe,” “The Changing Map of Eastern Europe: Who Moved? My Ancestor or the Country?” and “Finding and Connecting with your Israeli Relatives.” Among its other activities members completed a “Quilt Project,” held its annual membership meeting and luncheon in June, discussed the IAJGS Conference in Las Vegas, offered the movie “My Grandfather’s House,” co-sponsored the “Sir Martin Gilbert Lecture,” and the Michigan Historical Museum Tour to Lansing, and attended the play “Golda’s Balcony” in Detroit.

JGS of Michigan is a member of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies (IAJGS) and encourages submissions to the Jewish Family Finder and the computerized Family Tree of the Jewish People. These databases, readily available on the Internet, have provided the link for many people from around the world to find lost and/or previously unknown relatives. Our library affords members a fine selection of books and other media on genealogical subjects. Periodicals, microfiche and newsletters from other societies and groups from around the world are also available.
